Sticking it to styrene!

One of the best emails I get in my overcrowded inbox are from Eco-Cycle. They always have practical tips for making life a bit easier and a lot more sustainable. I was thrilled when they picked the theme of styrofoam for this month's topic, and sure enough they have wonderful and simple suggestions for making this material less prevalent. Here's the latest email, #3 in the series of Sticking it to Styro and I think it's the most relevant for us at Zero to Go. It's all about encouraging restaurants to stop using styrofoam, and all suggestions are powerful.
#1: Don't support businesses that use it - take your purchases elsewhere!
#2: Tell them how you feel!  explain that 1) you’re a fan of the restaurant, 2) why you don’t like PS foam and 3) what recyclable and compostable containers they could be using instead.
#3: Leave a written comment (via comment card, letter, email, or leave a note on the table).
#4: Suggest an alternative - let them know that other products are out there, and leave them the name and number of a supplier (preferably local).

Check out the full text of the email HERE, and stay tuned for the next installment about alternatives!

On a totally different topic, Eco-Cycle is an incredible organization that handles recycling, education, and manages a hard-to-recycle center in Boulder, Colorado. It'd be amazing to have something like that in Dutchess County, wouldn't it? Learn more about what they do at ecocycle.org.
