It’s time for
residents of the Hudson Valley to “Go for a Walk or Ride, Just Don’t
Drive” on Saturday, September 24 to help move the region closer to
a clean economy.
Join
the Cornell Cooperative Extension Associations in Dutchess and
Ulster Counties along with collaborating organizations for a
“Get Moving Hudson Valley” event at Walkway over the Hudson Park in Poughkeepsie
from 10:00am-12:00pm on 9/24 to raise awareness of the need for energy
conservation and a green economy. CCE and local
organizations will be at the Poughkeepsie and Highland sides of the
Walkway over the Hudson Park from 9:00am-3:00pm providing information on
sustainable transportation, walkable and bikeable communities, local
trails, alternative energy and energy conservation, climate change
impacts in NY, and ways for citizens to get involved.
Co-sponsoring organizations include
Sustainable Hudson Valley, Catskill Mountainkeeper, Dutchess and Ulster County Environmental Management Councils, Gilmour Planning, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, League of Women Voters of the Mid-Hudson Region,
Revolution Cycles, SUNY New Paltz NYPIRG Chapter, Vassar Greens, Wappinger Greenway Trail Committee and local 4-H clubs.
Participants
can learn more about the local impacts of climate change that are
already occurring in NY, and actions that are needed at the
individual and government level to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Local NGOs will provide research-based information on:
- How residents can save energy and reduce their carbon footprint, and get a free or reduced-cost energy audit through the Green Jobs Green NY program;
- The benefits for local governments to sign on to the New York State Climate Smart Communities Pledge and Sustainable Hudson Valley’s 10% challenge.
- Trail maps and free youth activities, including rides on the CCE Energy Bike and demonstrations of the 4H renewable energy laboratory with the Dutchess County 4H Outdoor Education Club.
- A bicycle clinic on Keeping Your Bike Road-Worthy and Making Your Life Bike-Friendly with Revolution Cycles in Saugerties.
This event is one of thousands taking place on September 24 around the world through 350.org
to hasten progress toward innovations in alternative transportation,
the green economy, energy conservation and climate change issues.
