In Dutchess County, many plastics are recycled locally. There's a number on the bottom of most plastics we use daily - all you have to do is flip it over & check it out. If you see 1,2, 3, 5,7 then toss it in the recycle bin! Anything else goes in the trash (unfortunately). For Beaconites, check out Royal Carting's webpage that explains what's acceptable.
If you want to delve deeper and get an idea of what all these numbers mean, here's an awesome one-page guide that explains it simply. I've found it to be very helpful. I also need to confess that reading about #6 nearly killed me, as I had no idea that #6 was polystyrene (styrofoam - the bane of my existence). I won't rant, but ever since I learned this, I've noticed that so many of the small plastic sauce containers & salad containers that businesses provide in Beacon are #6.
