Plastic bottle cap recycling

Did you know that the plastic bottle caps on many plastic bottles are not recyclable? I didn't know this until recently, when a local pal of mine & fabulous designer Emily Sylvester  explained the issue to me. The plastic tops usually don't have a number that indicates what type of plastic it is. (I've heard mixed stories now, so please take the following with a grain of salt until I can visit our local recycler Hudson Baylor in Newburgh to get the actual scoop.) Either the bottles are recycled, top and all OR they are totally discarded from the conveyor belts at the recycling plant. I guess it depends on where you live, and how your recycler handles plastic bottles with lids.

Either way, I really dig Aveda's plastic top recycling program. The beauty products company accepts donated caps from individuals and schools (working on getting this for Beacon!!) and repurpose the caps into new bottles for their products, made from 100% recycled bottle cap plastic. Here's an extreme view from the UK - informative site, and I sort of enjoy the shock value of their "take your top off!" campaign. Yay for guerilla marketing!
