What's Next for Zero to Go?

Since the last electronics recycling day, which coincided perfectly with an article about me in the Poughkeepsie Journal, many people have been asking me what's next for Zero to Go. I have a long-winder answer, but it's all about more access to local e-waste recycling days and other recycling and reuse opportunities. So far, we've collected and recycled 25 tons of electronics here in Beacon - that's something to celebrate! Here's what I'm doing, and what I'd love to do.

Current Projects:
  • Organizing an electronics Recycling Day in the spring with WeRecycle, and touring their Westchester facility (pics coming soon!)
  • Working with the City of Beacon and WeRecycle to install a permanent collection container for electronics
  • Managing a pilot program to get surplus industrial felt (locally made) to 12 local artists and designers to create products
  • Helping a local scrapyard to recycle thousands of pounds of mixed plastic from wire insulation

Working Towards:
  • Having a Hazardous Cleanup Day in Beacon in 2012
  • Finding out how much local businesses are spending on disposable to-go cups and containers, and working on finding a more affordable and environmentally sustainable alternative
  • Connecting all the towns in Dutchess County that are organizing e-waste days, and cross promoting the events

The Dream:
  • Having a place in Dutchess County to bring hazardous waste and electronic waste every day! There needs to be regular access to a resources like this.
  • Having a materials exchange of some type - more writing on this in the future.
